Cities in New Jersey are among the most desirable eco-friendly suburbs in the United States

When choosing the best cities to settle in, choosing a city that offers eco-friendly living is becoming increasingly important for many people. And according to a recent report, three of the most desirable sustainable suburbs in the country are right here in the Garden State.

Solar Insure, a California-based solar energy company, surveyed 3,000 respondents about the greenest cities they would most like to move to for an eco-friendly lifestyle. The company used the results to rank the 120 most desirable sustainable suburbs across the country.

The selected communities all offer the charm and amenities that are a hallmark of suburban living, but also focus on energy efficiency, green initiatives and reducing their overall environmental footprint.

New Jersey’s most desirable sustainable suburbs

The New Jersey cities of Montclair, Princeton Junction and Maplewood have all been named the most desirable sustainable suburbs in the country.

The highest on the list for the Garden State, no. 36 Montclair’s pedestrian-friendly neighborhood and easily accessible public transportation system contributed to its ranking and minimized the car dependency of the city’s residents. Montclair also has a designated Office of Sustainability, demonstrating the city’s commitment to the environment through a comprehensive recycling program, community gardens and green building codes, among other features. The report also mentioned farmers markets and local food initiatives that promote sustainability in Montclair.

Princeton Junction, which ranked 43rd, was highlighted in the report for its green building standards, extensive recycling and sustainable landscaping practices. According to the report, the city is also known for its numerous parks and trails, hosts farmers markets to support local agriculture, and has a convenient public transportation system that minimizes car dependency.

No. 65 Maplewood was named because it promotes its recycling and composting programs, promotes downtown walkability and offers an abundance of green space, the report said. The city is also known for supporting green building practices, energy-efficient upgrades, and several other sustainability initiatives.

More desirable eco-friendly suburbs in the Tri-State area

Several other suburban communities in the New York metropolitan area were named among the most desirable eco-friendly suburbs in the country, including one that made the top 10 of the rankings.

According to the report, Brooklyn, specifically the Prospect Park area, was named the sixth most desirable eco-friendly community. The district’s integration of green infrastructure, bike paths, and a variety of public transportation contributed to its ranking, and the Prospect Park area was highlighted for its energy-efficient buildings, community gardens, and waste reduction programs.
