Clemson football is set to welcome Purdue transfer Will Heldt, according to the report

Has Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney changed his stance on the transfer portal?

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Tigers are hosting Purdue transfer edge rusher Will Heldt for a visit in the next few days. According to Thamel, Heldt also attends LSU and Texas A&M.

This potentially indicates that Clemson could begin to utilize the transfer portal, which would mark a significant change for the program under Swinney. The Tigers have only added two players to the transfer portal so far in backup quarterbacks Hunter Johnson and Paul Tyson, both of whom were essentially coaches during their time at Clemson.

Heldt is currently one of the top transfer players available, ranking as the No. 45 overall transfer and No. 7 edge rusher, according to 247 Sports’ transfer rankings. The 6-foot-6 edge was a bright spot for the struggling Boilermakers in 2024, finishing the season with 56 total tackles and five sacks.

Swinney recently answered questions about the transfer portal and provided insight into his plans to attack the portal.

“It just depends,” Swinney said when asked if Clemson would accept any transfers. “When something unexpected happens. At the moment we don’t expect anything unexpected. But who knows? It’s a good tool to know you can get a guy when you need him.”
