Closures in Delaware due to winter storm in early January

A major snowstorm is expected to hit Delaware, according to the National Weather Service.

Snowfall is expected to begin Sunday evening and continue through Monday, with rates possibly reaching 1 inch per hour. Sussex County could feel the brunt of the storm.

Gov. John Carney activated the Delaware National Guard on Sunday to support storm response efforts. The Delaware Emergency Management Agency is also activating its Emergency Operations Center in Smyrna and coordinating with agencies across the state as the storm approaches.

Travel will likely be challenging with hazardous conditions impacting both Monday morning and evening commutes. Slippery roads are also expected to impact Tuesday morning commutes.

There were no driving bans until Sunday night.

In anticipation of the inclement weather, organizations, agencies and offices have begun announcing cancellations and closures. As the storm progresses, check back for updates:

Public schools

Schools in the Brandywine School District remains closed on Monday. All extracurricular activities and games have been canceled. The students are not given any tasks.

Capital School District Schools remains closed on Monday. According to the district’s announcement, 12-month employees will work remotely.

Colonial School District – All colonial schools and offices will be closed on January 6th. The district said there will be no extracurricular activities or evening programs and that all sports practices and games have been canceled.

Christina School District schools and offices remains closed on Monday.

Indian River School District is closed on Monday.

Lake Forest Schools and offices will remain closed on Monday.

Odyssey Charter schools and offices remains closed on Monday.

Red Clay Consolidated School District remains closed on Monday. All extracurricular activities and programs have been canceled for the day.

Seaford Schools remains closed on Monday. Extracurricular and evening activities, including sports, are also canceled Monday.

Sussex Technical High School – will take place on Monday on a remote learning day. The campus will be closed.

Universities

No university has announced its closure.

Governments

Offices in the State of Delaware All three counties will be closed Monday, January 6, during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Non-essential employees will not be allowed to report to work for this period, but essential employees scheduled for severe weather must report as scheduled.

City of Newark Offices remains closed on Monday. Crews are actively monitoring the weather forecast and are prepared to clear residential streets and paved paths, according to the city. If possible, residents should park their cars in their driveways to assist the plowers.

Wilmington has delayed its garbage collection. No trash collection on Monday, January 6th. Trash and recyclables will now be picked up on a modified schedule:

Tuesday, January 7th: East of the I-95 garbage disposal area
Wednesday, January 8th: Garbage pickup west of I-95
Thursday, January 9th: East of the I-95 recycling collection site
Friday, January 10th: West of the I-95 recycling collection facility

Sussex County Government Due to the forecast, offices will be closed on January 6th.

Delaware Courts

All court facilities in the state of Delaware, with the exception of the 24-hour courts of the peace (JP Courts 3, 7 and 11), will remain closed on Monday.

Community organizations

Brandywine Counseling & Community Services, Inc. – Treatment centers in Dover, Milford and Georgetown will remain closed Jan. 6. These locations will be open from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, for customers to pick up their Monday medications. Downstate customers are strongly encouraged to pick up medications on Sunday. However, if needed, medications can be picked up at the Lancaster Avenue or Newark treatment centers on Monday, January 6, from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. All other BCCS services, including mobile services, will be closed on January 6th.
