Coal: A Fuel Option for Both Community and Domestic Use | Cooperative expansion

As large as Alaska is, regional energy independence often depends on the amount of fuel nearby and the amount of electricity or heat needed.

Southeast Alaska has historically produced cheap electricity through the development of numerous local rivers to generate hydroelectric power. Even in the shadow of North Slope oil production and the pipeline, Anchorage has had some of the lowest-cost energy sources in the country over the past half-century thanks to its adjacent Cook Inlet natural gas reserves.
