Cold front brings temperatures near freezing to Texas

It’s about to get cold in San Antonio, really cold. In fact, it will only feel like winter for a few days across much of Texas, but the Alamo city will finally get its fair share of frigid air.

Some arctic, dry air is expected to move through San Antonio on Friday and bring temperatures down significantly. Temperatures on both Friday and Saturday are not expected to even exceed 55 degrees in the heat of the afternoon. This is the first bout of really cold air to hit the Alamo City since the end of the summer.

“The dry low pressure air and good overflow pattern picking up again Friday will result in a much cooler day than was forecast just a few days ago,” the National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio office reports. “By midday (Friday), light showers are expected to increase across the northern Hill Country, likely increasing air temperatures a few degrees below morning lows.”

San Antonio’s high temperatures are expected to be 53 degrees on both Friday, December 6, and Saturday afternoon. And low temperatures will be even cooler, falling to the mid to low 40s by Friday night.

These cool temperatures will be felt even more strongly in the Texas Hill Country north of San Antonio, which is quite typical given the elevation and location to the north. In Fredericksburg, temperatures will not exceed 50 degrees on either Friday or Saturday, and lows will fall into the mid to upper 30s.

No frost is expected on the horizon for the rolling hills of central Texas, but the chance of rain is higher in the Hill Country than in metropolitan areas. From Kerrville to Fredericksburg there is a 30% to 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms between Friday night and Sunday afternoon.

This cold front cooling trend will also have widespread impacts across Texas. Texas Panhandle cities such as Amarillo will see overnight temperatures dip into the low 30s Thursday evening and continue to dip below 40 degrees through the weekend. However, afternoon temperatures will be surprisingly warmer than San Antonio, reaching the mid to upper 60s.

In North Texas, cities like Dallas and Fort Worth will experience near-freezing temperatures overnight starting Thursday, Dec. 5, but lows will be in the low 40s through the weekend. The afternoons will also be cool and stay below 50 degrees throughout the weekend.
