Colorado’s minimum wage will increase in January 2025

The minimum wage for Coloradans will increase in January, and here’s what to expect.

The new minimum wage, increasing based on the Consumer Price Index, will be $14.81 per hour, up from $14.42 in 2024.

That’s an increase of 2.7%.

The minimum wage for tipped workers can be $3.02 less than the regular minimum wage. In 2025 it will rise from $11.40 to $11.79 per hour.

The History of the Minimum Wage in Colorado

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and has not changed since 2009.

Colorado’s minimum wage was equal to the federal minimum wage until 2007, when voters mandated an annual change based on the Consumer Price Index.

The CPI measures changes in the prices of goods and services, such as: B. Food, gasoline and housing costs.

Then, in 2016, voters again supported minimum wage increases of 99 cents in 2017 and 90 cents a year thereafter until they reached $12 an hour. Annual increases continue to occur based on the consumer price index.

In Colorado, local governments can set their own minimum wage as long as it is higher than the state minimum wage. The City and County of Denver, Edgewater, Boulder County and the City of Boulder all have a higher minimum wage as of January 2025.

The Fort Collins City Council considered whether to adopt its own minimum wage in 2023, but ultimately rejected it.
