Comments due Dec. 10 for Boise National Forest fire recovery plan • Idaho Capital Sun

The Boise National Forest is seeking public feedback on a proposed restoration effort designed to mitigate impacts from the 2024 wildfires, including safety risks, possible soil erosion and damaged infrastructure.

“The Boise National Forest, along with our partners, experienced a truly challenging 2024 wildfire season with over 245,000 acres burned across the Forest Service System,” Boise National Forest Supervisor Brant Petersen said in a news release. “This requires a greater remediation effort than we have ever undertaken and one that requires a timely response.”

Proposed remediation efforts being considered include:

  • Removing fire-destroyed and damaged trees along roadsides to reduce the risk of falls and saving burned trees that are economically viable
  • Reforestation of native tree species
  • Rebuilding forest infrastructure including bridge and road culverts, replacing signs and repairing damaged campsites
  • Preventing the creation of unauthorized motorized routes that hinder the natural recovery of vegetation, spread noxious weeds and increase soil erosion
  • Working with grazing permits on affected parcels to allow for rest periods and ensure vegetation in burned areas can recover
