Cuba is faced with nationwide for the second night in a row – DW – 16.03.2025

Millions of people in Cuba remained without power for a second night in a row on Saturday when the island state dealt with a large power failure.

The Associated Press reported that the electricity went out in the evening and that internet and telephone services were temporarily.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on social media that the authorities “worked intensively to restore the stability of the network”.

The efforts to restore power in Havana and in the second largest city on the island failed Santiago de Cuba on Saturday and forced the network operator to start again from scratch.

In the meantime, most Cubans have been living outside of Havana for months with rolling power outages, which sometimes took up to 20 hours a day.

Cuba with sanctions, economic downturn suffered

Cuba’s state -owned pension company, the Cuban electricity union, said on Saturday that his strategy was to create “microsystems” that are gradually connected to restore the electricity on the entire island.

Experts have mainly attributed the recent power failures in Cuba to fuel shortages and aging infrastructure.

Cuba is still out of an economic crisis that was triggered by the United States during the Covid 19 pandemic and also from tightened sanctions.

US President Donald Trump recently promised sanctions against the island’s communist government and promised to be “hard” towards the Caribbean nation.
