Cube critics are excited as they see both “Wicked” and “Gladiator II.”

Cube critics were patched up this week with “Wicked” and “Gladiator II.”

“Wicked” is the winter blockbuster everyone has been waiting for. It is a lively adaptation of the Broadway musical (which itself is loosely based on a book) and tells the story of a young witch who finds herself in the land of Oz.

The film is led by the incredible Cynthia Erivo, who carries the film with a stunning performance, and Ariana Grande, whose presence adds sparkle. The supporting cast also shines with Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh as a clever puppeteer and Jeff Goldblum as an entertaining magician.

“Gladiator II” pales in comparison to its predecessor. While the performances are strong – Paul Mescal gives a solid lead performance, Pedro Pascal is intriguingly ambiguous and Denzel Washington steals the show as the villain – it does struggle with the depth of the plot.

Mescal’s character seems underdeveloped and often only responds to action scenes, while Denzel electrifies every moment on screen but doesn’t get enough interaction with Mescal to enhance the story. “Gladiator II” is worth a look if you have time, but if you have to choose, “Wicked” wins by a landslide. Both films are now in cinemas.
