In the seventh game of the World Chess Championship D Gukeshthe youngest challenger in history, drawing against the reigning champions, Ding Liren. That was Gukeshis the fourth draw in a row.
The game played on Tuesday resulted in both players scoring 3.5 points each. They still need four points to secure the championship.
After 72 moves and five hours and 22 minutes of play, the players agreed on a draw.
Ding Liren faced a difficult situation for most of the game and found itself in a losing position. However, Gukesh made a crucial mistake that allowed the champion to recover.
Despite playing with white and gaining a significant advantage, Gukesh’s misjudgment led to the longest play of the game so far.
Liren’s escape was considered remarkable, recovering from what experts described as a lost rook and minor piece endgame.
Gukesh admitted he missed a crucial opportunity to take the lead.
“It’s never pleasant to miss a winning position, but I’m happy with the fact that I outplayed my opponent pretty easily in the opening. I thought I would win if I could consolidate my position, and at some point things got difficult. “I don’t know where I missed, but it should be a win,” said the Indian.
Gukesh expressed his disappointment but also acknowledged that Liren had missed opportunities early in the game.
“The result is fine. Obviously an opportunity was missed today. It’s a bit of a disappointment, but he (Liren) also missed a few chances at the start of the game. So I think it’s fair that we’re here. “The second half will of course be crucial,” he added.
Liren seemed to have solved his opening difficulties in recent games. However, he was on defense in this game.
Liren’s defense proved resilient and managed to overcome the difficult situation and secure a draw.
The championship remains highly competitive, with both players displaying exceptional skill and resilience. The upcoming Game 8 promises to be an intense competition to get the seven points needed to win.
