David Schwimmer from Friends gives you goosebumps of laughter

Disney+ brought RL Stine’s classic young adult horror anthology Goose flesh Back on TV screens to remake it for a new generation of horror fans. With its dark and wryly humorous plot, twisted intrigue, fresh themes and nods to its ’90s roots – including the return of iconic puppet mascot Slappy – the Goose flesh The restart was a complete success. Now season 2 aims to surprise the audience once again Friends Star David Schwimmer in the lead role.

Goosebumps: The Disappearance is an all-new story based on a classic idea – the evil plants from Stay Out of the Basement – with a darker twist. In 1994, four teenagers went missing while venturing beneath New York City. 30 years later, fraternal twins CeCe and Devin visit their father Anthony (played by Schwimmer) in Brooklyn. But Anthony has a tragic past that’s directly linked to mysterious disappearances – and his obsession with it unleashes a new round of terror. In an interview with CBR, Schwimmer talks about his role as Anthony and the power of humor and comic relief within it Goose flesh‘ Dark and spooky storylines.

CBR: Anthony is going through a tough time right now Goosebumps: The Disappearance. He’s struggling with his mother’s health problems, his estrangement from his children, his brother’s death haunting him – and now he has this killer plant ruining his life! Were you able to relate to him at all?

David Schwimmer: Oh, in many ways, yes! I’m a divorced father of a teenager, and while I’m not a botanist, I do have the side of me that’s pretty scientifically oriented. I love learning about and studying plants, insects and animals. Yes, I’m such a nerd!

Luckily my mother is doing well and doesn’t have dementia – although as a son you naturally always worry about your parents as they get older. So there was a lot that I could identify with – the character, and most of all there was just a lot of humor and great comedy, a lot of physicality. So it was good; it was fun.

Obviously most TV viewers know you as Ross Geller Friendsso that’s the kind of character they’ll want from you. But Goosebumps: The Disappearance is not a sitcom and Anthony is much more complicated. What are the biggest differences between the two roles and were there any similarities?

A “Friends” fan theory explains why Ross’ son Ben disappeared from the series and uses it to explain the character’s over-the-top development.

The loss of his brother has a tragic backstory. And I think as the series progresses we’ll realize that there’s a big secret about what happened to his older brother. When Anthony was only nine years old, his older brother tragically disappeared. So that obviously affected his whole life and the (life of) his whole family.

There’s a lot of drama for Anthony right now, caring for his mother and being a divorced father trying to cope with and provide for his teenage children. There are a lot. It’s pretty heavy. The trick – or challenge, I think – was finding the humor. Find the funny. And that’s why the role appealed to me. It’s like, “Okay, how do we make it fun when everything in this guy’s life is so challenging?”

I think we found a way. Not only is the script really good, but I think I was able to work with the writers and directors to get as much comedy out of it as possible. I think you’ll see that the tone of humor is very different in this show. It’s all about the tone, but I think we nailed it. So keep your fingers crossed!

Goosebumps: The Vanishing premieres on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, 2025.
