DC AREA sees frozen rain overnight, which could cause treacherous commuting on Thursday

A winter mix in the DC area on Wednesday evening brought a snow and ice -cold rain into the streets overnight into Thursday.

Wednesday was dark and cloudy, with temperatures between the 30s and 40s, “10 to 15 degrees cooler” as Tuesday, 7new’s first alarm meteorologist Brian van de Graaff, said the upcoming storm “A potpourri winter weather. “

On Wednesday and until Thursday there was an ice -cold rain that threatened the shuttle traffic on Thursday morning, as the surface temperatures freeze.

“It will happen overnight while many of us sleep,” said van de Graaff.

A winter weather consultation is in force until 12 p.m. on Thursday. Until Thursday there is also an ice storm warning for long -western Maryland until noon.

The Reagan National Airport had a soil delay until late Wednesday due to the weather.

“So overnight, early Thursday, they are particularly careful on untreated surfaces,” said van de Graaff.

“Our biggest concern for ice will be our northwestern suburbs,” said van de Graaff. “Once again, we all switch back to the rain to the middle of the midmor, and then we will see far above the freezing temperatures for most of the day.”

Several school systems in the DC region have announced that they will open two hours due to the forecast on Thursday. The counties Fauquier and Culpeper in Virginia also canceled the activities after school for Wednesday. Look at the full list of closures and delays here.
