“Defending My Home Turf” – Yuya Wakamatsu looks to secure the world title by defeating ONE newcomer Gilbert Nakatani

Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu looks to score a meaningful victory and earn a shot at the ONE Flyweight MMA World Title at ONE Fight Night 26: Lee vs. Rasulov on December 6th in US primetime on Prime Video.

The Japanese veteran is currently in final preparations for his MMA match against dangerous promotion newcomer Gilbert Nakatani at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Long a mainstay of MMA’s flyweight elite, Wakamatsu will enter this contest riding a two-fight win streak that has earned him the No. 2 spot in the division’s rankings – and has him knocking on the door of a world title shot.

Following the retirement of former titleholder Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson earlier this year, the MMA flyweight throne is now vacant and up for grabs.

“Little Piranha” knows exactly what is at stake at ONE Fight Night 26. He knows that a loss to the talented American would send him to the back of the queue, where he would have to restart his climb toward gold.

But he told onefc.com that he doesn’t feel any added pressure ahead of the clash with Nakatani. Instead, he sees it as an opportunity to prove that his six years of experience in the largest martial arts organization in the world sets him apart from the rest of the pack:

“It could be risky depending on how you look at it. But I feel like I have an advantage because of the experience I’ve gained in ONE competitions. It’s like defending my home game – I’m determined not to lose.”

Wakamatsu has carefully studied Nakatani and admits that he will pose a serious threat in all phases of the fight.

With this in mind, he approaches the showdown with a healthy sense of caution and respect for his opponent:

“This applies to every opponent, but it is important to never give up. He will strive for a degree in every way, and so will I. The key is to find balance and not become careless. He has a strong right hand and a lot of power, so I have to make sure I don’t lose out in those areas.”

As one of the division’s most versatile athletes and a longtime veteran, it’s no surprise that Wakamatsu sees more than one path to victory.

However he wins – be it by submission, knockout or a hard-fought decision – he promises to deliver a crowd-pleasing performance in Bangkok:

“I have several scenarios in mind. I could go for a submission or a knockout with my punches. Be it a decision or a goal, I am prepared for everything. If there’s a chance, I’ll go for the finish – I don’t want to leave it up to the judges.

“Winning an uninteresting decision doesn’t mean much to me. From the first second to the last, I will, as always, look for closure. I also want to show how much I have developed, especially in my last two fights.”

Wakamatsu: “I can take out Moraes” in a possible rematch

While he won’t look past Gilbert Nakatani on December 6, Yuya Wakamatsu is ultimately focused on punching his ticket for a shot at 26 pounds of MMA flyweight gold.

With no world champion currently at the top, he knows that any number of contenders could secure a shot at the world title with a sufficiently impressive performance.

“Little Piranha” is happy about each of them:

“I definitely want the ONE championship belt. I don’t care who the opponent is – I just want a title shot and that belt. If I win this fight I will ask for a title shot. Whether it’s a rematch with (Adriano) Moraes or someone else, I’ll take on whoever comes in front of me.”

In fact, another encounter with “Mikinho” could be on the table. In 2022, Wakamatsu came up short against the then-reigning ONE Flyweight MMA World Champion.

And Moraes, for his part, is fresh off a submission victory over Danny Kingad that cemented him as a No. 1 contender.

Although Wakamatsu is eager to fight for the world title against any opponent, he said a potential rematch with the Brazilian superstar would be very different to their first meeting:

“The fact that Moraes managed to win (over Kingad) was really impressive. Still, I’m confident I can beat this and take care of him myself. Looking back, I am a completely different fighter today than I was two years ago. I believe I can eliminate Moraes.”
