Stargate Atlantis: “Duet”

A fan favorite prop out of Stargate Atlantis has to be Ronon Dex’s alien blaster, wielded by actor Jason Momoa during his four seasons on the show. So how did this come about? To trace the line between idea, conceptual art and production, Dial the Gate turned to it Atlantis Property Master Dean Goodine.

Goodine continued working Stargate Atlantis for two seasons (and also for two seasons after that). SG-1). He then turned his attention to other genre favorites like refugeJason Momoa’s post-apocalyptic fantasy drama Seeand the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians. In this conversation with “Dial the Gate” he talks about working on the legendary science fiction weapon.

The process, of course, begins with the script and the director’s vision – which leads to the fantastic artwork by production designer James CD Robbins:

“I went to James with my idea after reaching out to Martin (Wood), who directed that episode, and talking about what it could be,” Goodine said. “(I) pulled out some pictures of six-shooters and that’s how I came up with the idea. And then James drew it. I gave him an idea of cowboy weapons, the wrapping of the handle and all that stuff. But James expanded it – as James always did.”

Check out this clip from the conversation:

Momoa joined the cast of Stargate Atlantis Beginning the second season of its five-year run. His character Ronon Dex was a “runner” who was chased from planet to planet by the Wraith for fun. As a former member of the Satedan military, Ronon proved to be a highly resourceful target.

Over the course of the show, the Atlantis team encountered another species, the Travelers, who were apparently the source of Ronon’s weapon (“Travellers”). Ronon may have traded for the Blaster at some point during his time as a Runner – or one of the Travelers may have been left behind after a run-in with the Satedan.

In the conversation, Goodine also thinks about further collaboration with Jason See for Apple TV+ and setting up that show’s amazing prop shop. And he tells the story of what happened when the actor saw him again years after Stargate ended.

“I came around the corner and could see Jason walking to the prop shop with (director Francis Lawrence),” Goodine said. “And suddenly he saw me and came running. He sprinted towards me and gave me a big hug, which I think reset my spine. So I guess he remembered me!”
