Detroit Pistons trainer JB Bickerstaff has an enormous price for awards

  • JB Bickerstaff and the Detroit Pistons defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday evening despite the absence of Cade Cunningham and Tobias Harris.
  • It is the youngest surprising turnaround for the pistons who tripled their victory over a year ago.

The Detroit Pistons were understaffed and the Cleveland Cavaliers – The Top Team of the Eastern Conference – had brought their superstar trio to the Little Caesars Arena.

But the game did not reflect the teams’ make -ups. Without Cade Cunningham or Tobias Harris, the pistons won an angry victory that marked several milestones for the most improved team in the league.

The Pistons (42-32) have collected a winning record for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Last year they tripled the victory (14) and became the first team in NBA history in one season with 82 games. And they also made a 12-game defeat against a Cavaliers team, led by Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Evan Mabley, which they had defeated three times this season.

Many pistons deserve recognition for victory. Maybe not more than the man in the main chair – JB Bickerstaff. Without his franchise player and top veteran, he trained the pistons into a 133-122 victory in which they won almost every category. Overall, they shot better from the 3-point line and the offensive glass on the free-wire line and led for 37 minutes, stretching their edge to up to 21 points.

It was a signature victory – that was by chance against the team that released him last summer.

And it happened to increase the chances of a unlikely coach of the year. Bickerstaff and Cavalier’s head coach Kenny Atkinson have the highest chance of gaining the award. Atkinson is the favorite, but Bickerstaff adds his case with every win.

“The way we play is his basketball stamp and his attitude,” said Tim Hardaway Jr., who led the pistons with 32 points. “He did an excellent job to give boys of this self -confidence and give the boys the ability to go out there and compete at both ends of the soil, whether they make a mistake here or there or several mistakes in a row. As long as they compete and go to the next game, this is all that is interested.

“If you have such a trainer and a trainer who, like him, tells each of his players, will go to each of them after training to ask them how their day is running, it is going a long way. We want to go to war and I feel what makes him the coach of the year.”

The players sang praise through Bickerstaffs all season. The pistons needed a cultural reset from the worst season in the Franchise story. Bickerstaff and newly hired President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon represented a clean slate. Bickerstaff then set the tone for the season early.

The pistons have been the best defense of the league since January 1. The coaching team reflects this (although they were certainly lifted by a career season by Isaiah Stewart and Ausar Thompson’s return).

The entire team bought. They force sales and use the transition, refuse shots on the edge and harassed opposing ball handler.

On Friday, they held the cavaliers to 35% of the shootout in the third quarter to open a lead of 21 points late in the period.

“It’s just a grit,” said Bickerstaff after the game. “It is a willingness to do everything to win a game and win it together. I love how balanced it was. I love it, as everyone contributed, everyone played a role and everyone was involved. For me, this is the funny part of the competition, we can watch people who are committed to each other, and it is only pure (it exploded).

Seven pistons achieved in double-digit numbers to overcome the lack of an all-star in Cunningham, who missed his third game in a row with a left-wing calf premiere, and Harris, who was a late scratch with the right Achilles tendonal inflammation.

Malik Beasley, who replaced Harris in the starting line -up, scored 19 points. Thompson had one of his best achievements of the season with 18 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

Dennis Schröder (17 points, 10 assists), Jalen Duren (16 points, 13 assists), Stewart (14 points) and Ron Holland II (10 points, 2-by-3 from 3) also reached double numbers.

Without Cunningham this week, the pistons went 3-0 at home. They are currently the fifth seed of the Eastern Conference, 1½ games in front of the Milwaukee Bucks and 1½ games behind the Indiana Pacers. After each measurement, the pistons have recently been one of the most impressive turning layers of the league.

You will be well represented during the price shifting season and will quickly approach with just eight remaining games. A Pistons coach last won coach of the year in 2001/02 when Rick Carlisle took home with the franchise after 50 games after 50 games. Only another coach in franchise history has received the honor: Ray Scott, 1973-74 after a season with 52 victories.

“They hope to find a group of people who understand what the team is and boys who are ready to sacrifice themselves as part of the team,” said Bickerstaff on Friday. “From the beginning of our time here, all of these boys have changed. They gave me the opportunity to train them.

“My job revolves around you and the fun I get is to watch you get better, you can see how you start. For me it’s all about these boys and I find my joy there.”
