Diana Russini expects Sam Darnold to make the QB market “competitive.”

When it comes to their quarterback situation, the Minnesota Vikings play chess while everyone else in the NFL plays checkers. The team signed Sam Darnold this offseason and then drafted the future of the franchise, JJ McCarthy.

After seeing Sam Darnold act the way he did, Kevin O’Connell found his next project that could potentially be Darnold’s replacement.

The arrival of Daniel Jones could prove to be the team’s cheapest replacement option in 2025. According to Diana Russini of The Athletic, Sam Darnold has secured a big contract and could create a “competitive” market for the veteran quarterback.

She writes: “Keep in mind that Darnold’s price could continue to rise as teams evaluate the draft and available free agent quarterbacks.” Front office executives believe his experience and performance in Minnesota this season “We will make Darnold’s market competitive in March.”

With so many teams in need of a quarterback and the 2025 class being less talented than usual at the position, Darnold could easily be compensated more than anyone expects. The signing of Daniel Jones is all the more important, even if it is only for the rest of the year.

The rest of the season will be one big selling point for the Vikings for Jones. If all goes well, they could give Jones a similar deal to what Darnold did for the team this year.
