Do you come to your state?

Washington – dozens of states across the country are considering their own versions of a federal law that could say critics that millions of Americans, including many married women, could be disregarded.

The Republican legislator introduced measures in 24 countries to which people prove their citizenship by using documents such as birth certificates or passports if they register to vote, according to the impartial voting right -wing laboratory. Three other states – Louisiana, New Hampshire and Wyoming – have issued similar laws in recent months.

Followers call the efforts a security measure and say that they try to reinforce laws that do not prevent state members from voting. However, the proponents of the voting rights argue that it is already extremely rare for non -state members – and the laws could make millions of Americans more difficult to hand over a ballot.

Opponents are particularly concerned that the requirements will meet rural communities, military personnel and married women. About 83% of the married women have changed their names, and for many this means that their birth certificates do not match their current ID.

In Washington, legislation as Saveguard American Voter Voter Felibibility (Save) passed the House of Representatives in early April, but it faces a hard battle in the tightly divided Senate.

The Save Act and state legislation across the country have all somewhat different requirements when it comes to which documents could be used to prove citizenship. Here is what to know.

States with existing rules

New Hampshire

New Hampshire held its first elections since its implementation of a new voter registration law in March, which is strictly about which ID can use. It is one of the only states in which such a law was in force during an election season.

After research by the New Hampshire campaign for voting rights, a subsidiary of the Progressive Group America, more than 95 people were rejected due to the new documentation law in the city elections based on the new documentation law.

Other residents said they had tried to register a ballot for the election of the law on March 11th and submit a ballot paper.

Betsy Spencer, a 70-year-old resident of Hopkinton, New Hampshire, told New Hampshire Public Radio that she was prepared with several documents when she appeared for voting, but was first avoided because she did not have her married name in her birth certificate.

Your situation is one of the most important concerns that the voting rights groups have about the proof of citizenship laws.

Married women who have changed their surname may have to insert additional documents such as a marriage certificate in order to prove their citizenship in New Hampshire and other countries that issue similar laws.

The State Secretary of the State in New Hampshire refused to comment on legislation when it was reached for this story.

Arizona

Arizona voters must already prove their citizenship in order to coordinate in state and local races. In fact, the Save Act reflects the laws in the books of the Grand Canyon State, the Republic of Arizona, reports.

The voters in the state are not obliged to do the same in federal competitions, since the National Voter Registration Act from 1993 prevents most states from confirming citizenship in national elections. New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Idaho, Wyoming and North Dakota are the only states that are freed from this rule.

Wyoming

Wyoming passed his law on March 21 on the basis of the Save Act. From July 1st, the state demands the residents to present one of several documents to prove its citizenship status, including a leadership that gives citizenship, a US pass, a birth certificate, military records, a tribal ceremony or a certificate of citizenship.

The Foreign Minister of Wyoming, Chuck Gray, described it in an explanation after his adoption as “elections integrity legislation”.

Five states – Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington – have currently improved the driver licenses that, according to the Department of Homeland Security, can serve as proof of citizenship. Wyoming is considering the legislation according to which US immigrants in the country would require the right documents to have a delimitation of their state-issued ID card, which says that they are “not a citizen of the United States”, but it is not yet a law.

Louisiana

The Louisiana law was put into force on January 1, which caused the proof of citizenship to vote, but the state has not published any guidelines about which documentation residents are required. It is not yet clear how citizenship requirements for national elections meet.

To observe states

Texas

One of the strictest evidence of citizenship invoices in the country is quickly due to the Texas legislation. The state’s Senate approved the proposal that is based on the law of Arizona on April 1. The legislation needs the approval of the state house and the signature of the state’s Republican governor of the state in order to become laws.

Legislation in Texas would apply retrospectively to people who are already registered as voters, not only for new voters. If it is issued, voters would have to provide proof of citizenship to take part in presidential elections and in state and local breeds, although some of the requirements are likely to be challenged in court.

“Texas is not only the second best state of the country, but also one of the states that, according to Trump’s executive ordinance, is very quickly documented evidence of citizenship legislation,” said Liz Avors, a high -ranking consultant for political political advisor to the voting rights laboratory.

President Donald Trump signed an arrangement of the executive at the beginning of this year, in which new requirements for national voter identification were determined. On April 24, a federal judge temporarily blocked the guideline to enter into force after several groups had sued the administration because it did not issue the authority to issue the command.

An analysis from the voting right -wing laboratory of the data from the US State Department showed that more than 12 million of the around 31 million people living in Texas have no passport, one of the main forms of citizenship documentation, said Avore. That is almost 40% of the state population.

Michigan

The legislators of the GOP state enter into a constitutional change in Michigan, in which those have to register to vote in order to submit the proof of citizenship. Michigan is one of the few states in which the drivers’ licenses could meet this requirement.

The proposal for changes said goodbye to a State House Committee, but still has to be made to coordinate in the chamber. It is likely that there is serious chances in the democratically guided Senate.

Pendants of the constitutional change have also started a separate ballot initiative. The state’s election board recently clarified the way for the organizers to collect the hundreds of thousands of signatures they need to bring the change to vote in 2026.

Nevertheless, the GOP State Rep. Bryan Posthumus, who represents the area north of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and presented the voters -id measure, said USA Today, April 22 that it was a “steep hill for climbing”.

Missouri

A draft law in Missouri in Michigan and other states at the beginning of March provided a committee of the Senate from a state Senate Committee, but still has to be voted on.

The author of the legislation, Senator Ben Brown, said that the proposal could be instructed in this meeting as a change in other election invoices in connection with the election -related invoices. But he said that the current legislative calendar would “quite late” to take measures: it is not impossible to survive in the coming months, but it will be increasingly unlikely.

States that have introduced laws

Legislators in more than a dozen states, including democratic strongholds, have introduced invoices that reflect the Save Act. Many are in the early phases of consideration, including:
