To clarify, we asked Tridev in an exclusive interview with HT Lifestyle whether women should lift weights or will lifting weights make them bulky?

Should women only lift light weights?

Many women tend to use lighter weights or avoid strength training because they fear looking “chunky” or too muscular. According to Tridev, this is an age-old myth that must die. When asked if lifting weights makes women bulky, Tridev replies, “I don’t think so. I suggest every woman lifts more weights.”

He adds: “For example, my wife – I’ve never seen anyone lift so much weight in my life. She is not a trainer and deadlifts with a weight of 155 kg. How much weight a woman should lift varies from person to person. There is a misconception that when women lift weights they look bulky. But no one talks much about the benefits of weightlifting, especially for women. Any kind of cardio or yoga training or similar training will not give you bone density or muscle mass if you don’t lift weight. Women can only gain mass if there is a hormonal problem, but otherwise they will not gain mass from lifting weights.”

Can you start weightlifting at 30?

Tridev says, “100 percent. I’ll give you an example. Shweta Tripathi, I started training when she was 35; Now she is 39. Before she started with me, she hardly did any exercise other than yoga. She now loves weightlifting and practices it according to her body. She can do push-ups, pull-ups and chin-ups properly. So she started at 35 and can still do everything. It’s about programming and motivation.”
