A seasonal greeting card, whether handwritten on personalized holiday stationery or typed on a tasteful e-card, is a way to show family and friends that you care this holiday season.

The annual practice, or for some a time-honored tradition, is a way to send “festive cheer and warm wishes” to everyone you care about. This includes extended family, neighbors or even your favorite waitress at your local restaurant in the month of December, etiquette expert Myka Meier told USA TODAY last year.

Seasonal greeting cards, often used to show goodwill to others through the written word, are typically sent to maintain meaningful connections or to extend “Christmas greetings” to those around you.

The practice can be a particularly “meaningful” way to convey good wishes to people with whom you don’t have regular contact, Meier said.

Here are some things to keep in mind this year, including proper etiquette, shipping recommendations, and the correct way to address your envelopes.

How “general or personal” you decide, says an etiquette expert

Lizzie Post, great-great-granddaughter of legendary etiquette expert Emily Post, previously told USA TODAY that the message or holiday greeting included in the card “can be as general or as personal as you want it to be.”

As you begin composing your message, keep in mind that the tone of your feelings or good news should be “cheerful and cheerful,” says Post.

“This is not your thank you letter. This is not a letter of condolence. This (holiday greeting card) is about sharing joy during a very festive time of year and I think your opinion on that is a really good thing,” she said. “Stick with those as much as you can positive tones.”

However, the recommended approach is to keep your message concise, warm and personal, Meier said.

“If you don’t know a person’s religion or what they celebrate, you can simply say “Happy Holidays” and include your holiday wishes. A warm sentiment or mention of shared memories or future plans is a great addition,” Meier said. “Sign with your name or a warm closing sentence that feels right until the end of your relationship. If you choose to send a Christmas card with a pre-written message, give it a personal touch by signing your name or names with a pen so it comes from the heart.”

The message and format chosen for the seasonal greeting card will vary depending on the person and style.

“Some people just make a printed card with a printed message, which is absolutely welcome,” Post said. “Other people decorate it with handmade decorations sewn onto the card. It’s really up to you, depending on your budget, your time, your inspiration and who you’re writing to.”

How do I write addresses on Christmas cards?

When addressing an envelope, you should write your name and address in the top left corner. According to the US Postal Service, write the recipient’s name and address in the bottom center of the envelope.

The USPS recommends that you print addresses neatly in all caps and use a pen or permanent marker for handwritten addresses. And when it comes to addressing an envelope, Daniel Post Senning, author and spokesperson for the Emily Post Institute, previously told USA TODAY, “The first tip is readability.”

When addressing an envelope, you should also include a person’s full name. However, Senning says it’s not necessary to include a person’s title for a Christmas card, especially if the person is a family member or friend.

“You want the way you approach someone to reflect their desires and the type of relationship you have with them,” he said.

Is it Miss, Mrs or Mrs?

If you actually want to use formal titles when addressing a holiday greeting, “Miss” refers to an unmarried woman – although it’s more commonly used for girls these days.

“Mrs” refers to a married woman, while “Ms.” can be used for any woman. Mr. is used for men.

In business, “Mrs” is usually the appropriate choice for women. The plural of two women is Mesdames and the plural of Mr. is Messrs.

People may also prefer other titles, such as the gender-neutral Mx. Senning emphasized that you shouldn’t be afraid to ask people how they would prefer to be addressed.

“One of the essential principles of good etiquette, whether in introductions or in correspondence, is that we address people the way they want to be addressed. “People can define for themselves what their identity is and how they present themselves,” he said.

How do you approach a couple?

One of the most traditional ways to address a couple consisting of a man and a woman is to use formal titles followed by the man’s first and last name. For example, Mr. and Mrs. John Kelly.

However, Senning explained that you can easily contact a couple by keeping their names on the same address line.

“It doesn’t matter who comes first. This is a discretionary decision,” he said.

Is it the Smiths’? Smith’s? Smith’s?

We can all use a refresher on where and when to put an apostrophe. Here’s a quick reference when writing or typing names for a holiday greeting.

The Smith family:

Do: The Smiths wish you a Merry Christmas. The Smiths’ Christmas Eve party is coming up soon. This gift comes from the Smith family.
Not: The Smiths are away for the holidays.

The Jones Family:

Do: The Joneses wish you a Merry Christmas. Jones’ Christmas Eve party is coming up.
Not: The Joneses are traveling for the holidays.

The May family:

Do: Merry Christmas in May. The Mays’ Christmas Eve party is just around the corner.
Not: The Maies are away on vacation.

Here’s a general rule: names ending in “ch”, except those pronounced with a hard k like “monarch”; S; sh; X; and z; must form them in the plural.

Common Seasonal Greeting Card Mistakes – Ways to Avoid Them

Seasonal greeting cards, like anything else, are subject to human error, which can occur either during the design process or when preparing to send.

Meier has several ways to avoid these mistakes. They are listed below for your convenience.

Double-check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation before sending
Check the current address to avoid incorrect deliveries
Make sure you use “correct postage” to avoid delays or returns
If possible, sign your name or ask family members to sign theirs to add a more personal touch
Ask if you are unsure how your recipient would like to be addressed
Make sure the “tone” of the message contained in the card matches the relationship you have with the recipient
Your name and address should be written in the top left corner of the envelope, while the recipient’s name and address should be written in the bottom center of the envelope
All important information such as names and addresses should be printed “neatly” in capital letters using a pen or permanent marker
The exchange of seasonal greeting cards is not fundamentally reciprocal
