Due to inclement weather, MCPS is canceling extracurricular activities

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) canceled all extracurricular activities on Friday, although all schools will close at their regular times, according to an email sent to MCPS families Friday morning.

Although the email did not specify why extracurricular activities were canceled, MCPS spokesperson Liliana Lopez told MoCo360 it was due to impending inclement weather. According to the email, all after-school and evening school and community activities in school buildings are canceled. The daycare centers in the school buildings will remain open as planned.

The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, DC issued a hazardous weather forecast for central and southeastern Montgomery County Friday morning. According to the National Weather Service, snow showers or squalls, a short, strong storm that often brings rain or snow, could occur near and north of Washington, D.C., Friday afternoon and evening. On Thursday afternoon, the Weather Service office in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. issued a winter weather advisory for portions of central, north-central, northeastern and northern Maryland from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

Montgomery County was not included in the warning, but accumulations of less than an inch of snow are expected, according to the weather service’s snowfall outlook map. According to the weather service, snow will “move through the region” from the afternoon into the evening and will fall for about one to two hours. According to WTOP, the D.C. region will see a mix of rain, sleet and snow between 1 and 6 p.m. In nearby Frederick County, public schools and offices are closing two hours early due to inclement weather.
