Hicksville, OH – A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck southeast of Hicksville early Sunday, shaking parts of the Ohio-Indiana border. Residents reported minor tremors that shook houses but caused no significant damage.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at 6:46 a.m. local time and was centered about one kilometer southeast of Hicksville at a depth of 9.5 kilometers. Although minor, it was widely felt in surrounding communities, prompting local officials to remind residents to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks.

Experts recommend inspecting homes and businesses for structural damage, especially around foundations and chimneys. Residents should also secure heavy furniture and have emergency kits ready. While aftershocks are unusual for quakes of this magnitude, they remain possible in the coming hours.

This seismic activity comes as the region prepares for colder weather. The five-day forecast suggests dry conditions through Monday, with temperatures falling to over 20C by New Year’s Eve. Travelers should prepare for icy roads overnight, especially on rural routes such as SR-18 and SR-37 near the quake’s epicenter.

Residents are encouraged to report any tremors they have felt to the USGS Did You Feel It? Tool to help scientists track the quake’s effects. Local emergency services remain on alert but have not issued any warnings.
