EFL preview: “Titanic Promotion Tussle” and a Six pointer

At the other end of the championship, all eyes are focused on a potentially huge descent between Hull City and Luton Town on Saturday at lunchtime.

The Hatters showed signs of life with seven points from their last four games and in the second floor at the weekend, two points ahead of Plymouth and four behind the fourth floor Cardiff, which have a better goal difference, and four behind them.

After a run of eight points from their last four games, the tigers are another two points and two places into the distance.

The average points that were achieved by teams in the last five seasons in the 21st place is 46.8 – Plymouth managed 51 points last season, Cardiff City 49 in 2023, but reading only needed 41 to exceed 2022 decline.

Luton currently has 35 with eight games to play and Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties radio: “We just have to make sure that we attack every game individually, but with the understanding of what the season may look like.

“If we continue to do what we can do, we believe that we can get to the figure we will need.”

Hull’s conflict with Luton is one of at least nine remaining devices between the sides near the soil that can fall under the “descent SIX pointer” category.

Luton will compete against Stoke and derby before the end of the season, while the Rams also visit Portsmouth and Hull in April before organizing the Potters on the last day.

Cardiff will start both Stoke as well as Oxford and Pompey against Hull in the last game of the season.
