Elmhurst man’s car stolen in towing scam: police

ELMHURST, IL – Over the past few days, Elmhurst Police have handled cases involving a carjacking, larceny, retail theft, telephone harassment and federal agent fraud. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:

Car stolen

  • A resident in the 100 block of Linden Avenue told police he was involved in an accident. The next day, a person claiming to be from Geico contacted him and asked him to tow his car to prevent further damage. A towing company responded and towed the car for repairs. When the victim went to the address on the towing papers, the car was gone. The resident was told by his insurance company that the towing company had been linked to several other vehicle thefts under similar circumstances. The incident occurred on November 19th and the resident reported it two weeks later. An investigation is pending.

Fraud by Federal Agents

  • A resident in the 200 block of North Maison Court told police Wednesday that she was contacted by someone posing as a federal agent. He demanded to leave cash on the porch. The resident realized it was a scam and called the police.

  • A resident of the 300 block of East St. Charles Road put three rings in his dishwasher to clean them on Nov. 28. When he returned he couldn’t find her. He thought it was stolen. Four days later he reported the theft.
  • A man stole three reindeer decorations from the front of Elmhurst Family Dental, 314 N. York St., around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. An investigation is pending. The man was described as white, wearing a blue baseball cap, a brown and green shirt or jacket, blue jeans and dark shoes.

  • Two men hid merchandise and fled in a black Toyota Corolla to Kohl’s, 303 S. Route 83, around 5 p.m. Tuesday. An investigation is pending. One of the men was described as Hispanic, 15 to 30 years old, with black hair, wearing a gray sweater and a blue denim jacket. The other suspect was described as being of Hispanic descent, 18 to 40 years old, with black and gray hair, wearing a long blue puffer jacket and black jeans.

Harassment on the phone

  • On Wednesday afternoon, someone repeatedly called the police station, 125 E. First St., harassing staff and threatening to harm officers. An investigation is pending.
