Marvel fans and video game enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the release of new content for a game that has only been out for a month.

A game update packed with new characters, maps and rewards will be released on Friday for Marvel Rivals, a third-person hero shooter game that lets users take on the roles of popular Marvel superheroes and villains. The update is called Season 1: Eternal Night Falls.

Marvel Rivals was released in December and quickly climbed the video game charts. An official Discord server for the game has already reached more than 2.2. According to a press release from Marvel, it is the largest gaming server on the instant messaging platform.

As video game fans prepare for the weekend, here’s what you should know about the new Marvel Rivals content.

What is Marvel Rivals?

Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play third-person hero shooter video game in which players compete in teams of two in various challenges set in the Marvel Universe. Players can choose from more than 30 superhero and villain characters including Captain America, Spider-Man, Groot, Venmo, Thor and Wolverine.

Marvel Games and Chinese developer NetEast Games released Marvel Rivals in December.

Some video game experts compare Marvel Rivals to Overwatch, a free-to-play first-person hero shooter game. Players also compete in teams of two and the game is set 60 years in the future on a fictional Earth. Overwatch was released in 2016 by Blizzard (known for World of Warcraft).

What will Season 1: Eternal Night Falls for Marvel Rivals include?

In Season 1: Eternal Night Falls, the Fantastic Four are introduced as playable characters. When the season first launches, Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic will be available to players. Later, Human Torch and The Thing will also be available, according to a press release from Marvel.

Three new maps will also be added to the game as part of the new season. According to a press release from Marvel, the maps will include “Empire of Eternal Night” in New York City; Sanctum Sanctorum, Midtown; and Central Park.

A new game mode will also be revealed as part of Season 1: Eternal Night Falls. In the new mode called “Doom Match,” eight to 12 players fight on a map, each belonging to a different faction and each faction hostile to the other, according to a press release from Marvel. Players earn points by eliminating opponents, and at the end of the game, the top 50% of players are considered the winners.

The new season will feature an event called Midnight Features. According to a Marvel press release, players will complete seasonal activities during the event to unlock limited-time rewards.

Finally, Marvel Rivals is partnering with live streaming platform Twitch to offer Twitch Drops. Twitch Drops are rewards that players receive for watching someone else play and streaming the game on Twitch.

According to a press release from Marvel, several updates to the base game will also be released on Friday, including improvements for Vanguard characters, which are primarily used to protect other players, and Duelists, who are the main combat characters.

Is Season 1: Eternal Night Falls free for Marvel Rivals?

Most of the new content coming to Marvel Rivals with Season 1: Eternal Night Falls is free, but there is also some content that can be purchased in-game.

The Eternal Night Fall Battle Pass will be available for 990 Lattice, the game’s currency. One thousand lattices equals $9.99. According to a press release from Marvel, the Eternal Night Fall Battle Pass includes 10 costumes, as well as related content such as sprays and emotes, ways for players to communicate with others in the game.
