Ethics complaint aims at Senator Sheldon Whitehouse over millions of grants to the non -profit organization of women

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Dr.i.

Whitehouse, a prominent advocate of climate policy, voted a non -profit organization for important legislative regulations that granted grants to Ocean Conservancy in which his wife had long been involved. Sandra Whitehouse, a marine scientist and political consultant, has been president of the advisory company Ocean Wonks LLC since 2017 and already worked as a senior political consultant at Ocean Conservancy in 2008.

The Foundation for Accounting and Civic Trust (fact) has selected the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate whether Whitehouse has violated the rules for the Senate conflicts. The group argues that the legislative support of Whitehouse of an organization associated with his wife directly benefited.

Federal records show that Ocean Conservancy has received over 14.2 million US dollars in federal subsidies since 2008. In 2024 alone, the non -profit organization received a grant of 5.2 million US dollars from Noaa and another 1.7 million EPA of 1.7 million US dollars, both for cleaning Marine. The NOAA scholarship was financed by the cross -party infrastructure law, which supported Whitehouse, during the EPA scholarship from a draft law he supported.

Ocean Conservancy has spent millions for ocean and climate problems, priorities that match the work of Whitehouse in the Senate. As a long -standing member and currently lived member of the Senate Committee for the Environment and Public Works and with the establishment of the Caucus of the Senate, he was a co -founder.

Financial information has shown that Ocean Conservancy has paid Sandra Whitehouse $ 2.686,800 through direct employment and advisory fees since 2010.

Ocean Conservancy has contested any misconduct and explained that Sandra Whitehouse was not compensated for from the grants and that the long -term role of the non -profit organization was emphasized in the clean -up work of sea waste. “The selection of Ocean Conservancy was based on our decades of specialist knowledge,” said Jeff Watters, Vice President of the Organization for External Affairs.
