Evaluating the Washington Capitals offense against the New Jersey Devils

The Washington Capitals earned a 6-5 win Saturday night in New Jersey that extended their road win streak to seven games, tying the franchise record for longest road win streak since the December-January 2022-23 season.

The offense has been hot, including the power play, and the Caps have scored 13 power play goals on 29 opportunities in their last 11 games since November 9, including at least one power play goal in eight of their last nine games. With the win, Washington improved to 4-1-0 for the second consecutive game this season.

The Capitals have scored five or more goals in 12 of their 24 games this season and are averaging an NHL-best 4.21 goals per game. During the 2023-24 season, Washington scored five or more goals in 10 of its 82 games.

Washington is 16-4-3 in their last 23 games against the Devils from the 2020-21 season. Additionally, DC has a record of 10-1-0 in their last 11 games played at Prudential Center. With a record of 17-6-1, Washington is not only in first place in the Metropolitan Division on Sunday, but is also dominating the league.

According to NHL Public Relations, the Capitals have won 10 games in a calendar month with a record of 10-4-1 and 21 points, the first time since December 2022 when they were 11-2-2 with 24 points. Washington is the only team this season to win 10 games in a single month.

Andrew Mangiapane scored his sixth goal of the season to give the Caps the lead early in the contest, which was his second goal in his last three games. Hendrix Lapierre provided the first assist on the game’s opening goal, marking his 20th career apple. Lapierre has four assists in his last five games since the Nov. 23 home loss to the Devils.

After the Devils briefly took the lead, it was Connor McMichael who equalized with his 14th goal of the season and his third game in a row with a goal against the Devils. He has five points in four games against the Devils this season. Jakob Chychrun and Rasmus Sandin added power play goals and McMichael’s goal was also a PPG. Taylor Raddysh and Pierre-Luc Dubois did it in the third round.

Grade A+: The Caps scored a touchdown in New Jersey and you can’t ask for much more to move into first place over a fierce opponent.
