Expert says Ford Mach E is the ‘worst’ car you can buy. Why?

TikToker and mechanic Thomas (@carsrme) recently shared a video explaining why he thinks the Ford Mustang Mach-E might be one of the worst new cars you can buy right now.

His video was viewed 164,500 times and sparked debate among electric vehicle enthusiasts and skeptics alike.

What is the alleged problem with the Ford Mach-E?

“This has to be the worst new car you can buy today,” begins Thomas, standing next to the Ford Mach-E.

He makes it clear that his criticism is not about the design or performance of the car.

“It’s not a bad car to drive or look like. Personally, I think it looks really good,” notes the mechanic. “I think the interior is really beautifully designed. You get this beautiful Tesla (dashboard), you actually get a display.”

But despite the aesthetic and interior benefits, Thomas says there are two major issues potential buyers should be aware of.

“The first thing to look at is how quickly it loses value,” he says.

Using the example of the Mach-E, which he was working on at the time, Thomas points to the manufacturer’s recommended retail price (RRP) of $50,000. “Currently it’s worth $23,000 at 15,000 miles,” he explains.

Although he says it wasn’t purchased at full MSRP, the car still lost significant value. “It was purchased for $43,000. Still, losing $20,000 in the first year is staggering.”

And according to Thomas, it’s not just an isolated case. “I saw someone on the forum today with a Mach-E GT that he paid $60,000 for. And the dealer only offered them $31,000. At 10,000 miles it was also a year old,” he adds.

Thomas points out that this isn’t just a Ford problem, but a trend in electric vehicles.

“It has nothing to do with lots of new cars. This simply has to do with electric vehicles. Electric vehicles lose value like stones,” he says. “They’re really good to lease. It’s terrible to buy right now.”

The second problem, says Thomas, is the range of the car. The Mach-E is claimed to have a range of 240 miles, but actual performance often falls short of expectations, particularly in colder conditions, Thomas continues.

As you can see, with 45% remaining, there are only 80 miles left,” he points out. “Any kind of cold and those things just go away.”

What other experts say

The fact is that electric vehicles currently often lose value more quickly than their gasoline counterparts.

A study by iSeeCars found that electric vehicles depreciate an average of 49.1% over five years, compared to 38.8% for conventional vehicles, Yahoo Finance reports.

According to iSeeCars, the Ford Mustang Mach-E in particular recorded a significant loss in value. According to the website, a Mach-E only retains about 52.3% of its original value after just three years.

However, it’s worth noting that this trend isn’t unique to Ford.

Other electric vehicles like the Audi e-Tron GT also reportedly lose up to 50% of their value within the first year, as Wired points out.

However, it should be noted that not all electric vehicles lose value at the same rate. Brands like Tesla have proven more resilient, with the Tesla Model 3 holding its value best.

As for the Ford Mach-E’s range, Edmunds real-world testing found the vehicle exceeded expectations by traveling 344 miles on a single charge, beating the EPA estimate by 39 miles.

However, actual range may vary due to factors such as driving habits, weather conditions and temperature.

In the comments, not all users agreed with the mechanic and stated that depreciation on new vehicles was not a major problem. Others had other reasons for disliking the Ford Mach-E.

“I wouldn’t buy it just because being called a Mustang is heretical,” one user noted.

“Who buys a brand new car and cares about the depreciation,” another asked.

“It seems that most electric vehicles lose value quickly,” said a third.
