Experts say GLP-1 drugs have potential benefits beyond weight loss

At the New York Times’ DealBook Summit, Eli Lilly’s CEO and an obesity drug specialist discussed the potential of the wildly popular weight-loss drugs to be used to treat many other conditions.

“Only 25 percent of our individuals in the United States today, December 4, 2024, are not overweight or obese.” “So do you think 75 percent of the country should be taking these medications?” “That I don’t say. I’m just saying we have a problem.” “Do you think we’re all going to end up using these drugs in some way?” “We’re starting to look at different use cases: things like alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder. We also talked about things like Parkinsonism and Alzheimer’s. So we will see that different disease processes come into play as we study GLP-1 receptor agonists that act outside the cardiometabolic domain.” “What has oral contraception done for women? It allowed humans to control their reproduction. Maybe the dream scenario here is that we can use these drugs to control our urges, including food, but perhaps other things too. And that would be – these studies will happen and we will know the answer to that. But I think that would be a breakthrough in healthcare.”
