The Hobbs move from Fast & Furious was part of a larger Dwayne Johnson problem

It was around the time that The Rock became its own franchise

The change in Hobbs’ characterization happened around the time Johnson became a standalone franchise, always playing the same character in the same type of film. He stopped being an actor and became more of a brand with an image that needed to be protected. He stopped playing characters that were even the least bit unlikeable. Every character he played was both an unstoppable force of nature and a lovable softie. And that’s what happened to Hobbs afterward Fast & Furious 6: He stopped being a single character and simply became an extension of The Rock’s brand.

Out of Angry 7 From then on, Hobbs was described as a tough guy with a heart of gold. He’s a tough mercenary who will also coach a girls’ soccer team. He rips off his equipment to join the final battle and redirects a missile with his bare hands, but he’s also a loving father. It’s far too safe – Johnson’s original interpretation of Hobbs was much more fun. Before the Fast and Furious Saga ends (maybe?) with Fast & Furious 11Hobbs needs to go back to his original characterization and become a little darker.
