Father searches for answers after daughter hit by car

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – A father is asking police for answers after his daughter was hit by a car while visiting Savannah and sent to the hospital.

It happened back in September, but there is still no information about who is responsible.

WTOC spoke with the family about the events of that day.

Chuck Courtright said his daughter Danielle was hit by a white BMW in September. He said the accident left her in the hospital for a week.

It’s December and they’re still looking for answers.

“Angry, completely angry,” Courtright said.

Courtright said his daughter was visiting this week.

“On her first day in Savannah, I didn’t even get a chance to see Savannah,” Courtright said.

She and her son were riding bicycles on Derrick Inn Road, not far from Courtright’s home, when she was hit.

“She hears a car speeding; She pushes my grandson off the side of the road. She turns around and just as she turns around a white BMW throws her about 35 meters,” Courtright said.

Below are photos of this bike and the damage after the incident:

“He stops, my grandson and them call for help and then he starts walking,” Courtright said.

He said he was able to find out the identity of the driver and the type of car from people who saw the incident.

“My grandson found my daughter’s phone, she’s calling me and when I got to the scene the entire back of her leg was ripped open and laying in the street,” Courtright said.

Something he or Danielle never expected.

“We looked week after week and didn’t make any progress. And finally they said that we weren’t investigating the matter, that it was a traffic accident and that my daughter, being a single mother, is now racking up hospital bills, etc. and we’re not getting any answers from Chatham County as to what she’s doing could do about it,” Courtright said.

WTOC reached out to the Chatham County Police Department regarding Courtright’s claim and asked for the incident report from that day. We haven’t received it, but they told WTOC it’s on file.

They sent a statement saying, “This remains an active and ongoing investigation with multiple follow-up actions being conducted by the officer handling the case.”

Additionally, anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers at 912-234-2020.

“If we can get him subpoenaed, we can at least get his insurance information so her hospital bills, etc. can be taken care of. If we get justice here that would be fantastic, you know, but one thing has to precede the other and we’re not getting one or the other,” Courtright said.
