February on the Criterion Channel with Argentine Noir, Joan Micklin Silver, Chantal Akerman and more

I look at myself something I was a student of cinema, whether self-taught or not, and, although I must confess, had never understood the concept of Argentine noir. Thanks to Criterion Channel for broadening my horizons with February’s show (succinctly titled “Argentine Noir”), which features a familiar title – Pierre Chenals Native sonan Argentinian film from a French director that adapts an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago – and five that I’m excited to discover. In retrospect, her wide-ranging Claudette Colbert program could serve as a lesson in old Hollywood between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month And Valentine’s Day: The former brings out a series of films like Nothing but a man, Portrait of JasonAnd Lose ground; The latter produces “New York Love Stories.” Carol To Cross Delancey um, strangely enough, Annie Hallthat probably wouldn’t have been streaming a few years ago.

Cross Delancey also receives a Criterion Edition Cool winter scenes; Both can be seen in a new Joan Micklin Silver program starring Carol Kane Hester Street and Shelley Duvall-led Bernice wears her hair in a bob. Chantal Akermans Today is a nightJean Grémillions Remorquesand Sara Gomez’s In a way (itself part of a larger director’s retrospective) are all available in new restorations. Phantom thread streams too, but I would really recommend you buy the incredible looking 4K if you have the means.
