Flyer relieve John Tortorella from head coaching tasks

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that the John Tortorella team relieved his tasks as head coach. Brad Shaw, Associate coach of Philadelphia Flyers, has been appointed interim head coach and, according to General Manager Daniel Briere, will immediately take on tasks.

“Today I made the very difficult decision to continue John as head coach of John,” said Briere. “John played an important role in our reconstruction. He set a game standard and restored what it means to be a Philadelphia flyer. John’s passion on the bench was only from his non-profit work in our community. Shaw, 60 (28.04.64), is in his third season with the team after he came to the Flyers coaching coaches in July 2022. He spent the 2021-22 season as an assistant coach at the Vancouver Canucks. Previously, he was an assistant to the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2016 to 2020-21 for five years, where he led the team to a record of 193-133-46 in 372 regular season games. In four of five years, Columbus also instructed a place in the playoffs of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Before he came to the Blue Jackets, Shaw worked as an association trainer for the St. Louis Blues from 2006 to 2011 to 2012 and from 2012 to 2015 to 2015. He was also part of the coaching staff at the New York Islander as an assistant for the 2005/06 season and ended the year as head coach of the team with a record from 18 to 18 to 4.

From 2002 to 2003 to 2004-05 he was also head coach of the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in the American Hockey League. Previously, he was head coach in the International Hockey League with the Detroit Vipers in the years 2000-01 and assistant in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons (2001-02).

Before he became a coach, Shaw played in the National Hockey League as a defender at the Hartfordwhalers (1985-92), Ottawa Senators (1992-1995), Washington Capitals & St. Louis Blues (1998-99).
