Foggy Causeway closed after ‘several accidents’ | A Tammany

Both sections of the Lake Pontchartain Causeway were closed Tuesday morning due to “multiple accidents,” a bridge official said.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that the crash on the southbound stretch involved 11 vehicles.

“We have fog. We have accidents on both sides. We’re still trying to assess it,” said Carlton Dufrechou, Causeway’s chief executive. “Please tell drivers to look for alternative routes.”

The closure was announced at 8:37 a.m

Dufrechou didn’t have details but said some injuries had been reported. He didn’t know how serious these injuries were.

At 9 a.m., he said there was no estimate as to when the spans could reopen.

Videos shared on social media showed rescue workers responding to the pileup.

Alternate routes between the North Shore and South Shore include Interstate 10 via Slidell or Interstate 55.
