Football fans in Kentucky are demanding change. How much would it cost to fire Mark Stoops?

Mark Stoops’ tenure at Kentucky was a mix of progress and frustration. While he holds the title of the program’s all-time winningest coach with 67 wins (10 vacated in 2021), his record against ranked opponents and in high-stakes moments paints a bleaker picture. His overall record isn’t particularly good either, at 67-73.

While Stoops has provided rare moments of joy — like the 2018 Citrus Bowl victory over Penn State — his overall record in SEC play (28-62) is disappointing. While Kentucky has improved its overall competitiveness, it hasn’t translated into consistent wins against the league’s top teams or even mid-tier teams.

A stunning takeover captures him

One of the most controversial aspects of Stoops’ tenure is his contract, which is structured to promote stability at all costs. Thanks Mitch.

Have fans reached their ceiling?

Kentucky football under Stoops has undoubtedly improved since the depths of the Joker Phillips era. Bowl games are occurring more frequently and the program has at times garnered national attention. However, the Wildcats’ inability to assert themselves as a true SEC contender remains a glaring flaw. And now that the bowl streak has ended and recruiting has hit a lull in hitting, are the Cats done?

For a coach who makes $9 million annually, fans expect more than mediocre seasons capped by dismal losses to rivals like Tennessee, Louisville and South Carolina. While Stoops has been protected by buyouts for years, the question remains: Is this the best Kentucky can do? If so, is that good enough?
