Ford is recalling over 272,000 SUVs and trucks due to battery problems that could cause them to stall while driving

A 2022 Ford Motor Co. Bronco Sport Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) during the media preview for the Chicago Auto Show in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. The Chicago Auto Show not only marks the resumption of the largest U.S. Cars

More than 272,000 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickup trucks are being recalled due to a battery problem that could cause the vehicles to stall.

The backstory:

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sports and 2022-2023 Ford Mavericks have batteries that may have “internal weld and/or casting defects.”

Ford noted that this recall applies to 12V batteries in the affected internal combustion engine vehicles and not electric vehicles.

In this case, a sudden deterioration in battery performance may occur while driving. According to the recall bulletin, if this happens while driving, the vehicle may slow down or fail to start again after automatically stopping, increasing the risk of an accident. This could also result in the hazard lights not working.

NHTSA said Ford was not aware of any accidents related to this issue as of November 20, 2024.

What you can do:

Drivers who own the affected vehicles should receive a letter in the mail informing them of the recall.

If your vehicle is affected, take it to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the battery replaced free of charge.

You can also check whether your vehicle is affected by the recall by searching for your VIN number here.
