NEXD 24 HOURS: Happy first day of meteorological winter! It definitely feels like winter outside as high temperatures in the area on Sunday were around 15 degrees below average! As we look toward the night, lows will bottom out in the teens and wind chills will ultimately stay in the single digits above 0°C. Areas near and west of the Mississippi River have a good chance of seeing minor storms overnight and early Monday morning. The accumulation will be less than an inch as most of us only get a light layer of dust on the floor. Highs will warm up a bit as we climb into the upper 20s. There’s still a light breeze on Monday, making it feel more like the teens and under-20s for most of the day.

LOOAING AHEAD: In terms of numbers, Wednesday will be the warmest day of the week as the thermometer finally hits the 30s again. Unfortunately we can’t quite endure this warm-up phase as the wind blows most of the day. Sustained winds will be blowing from the northwest at 15 to 20 mph (24 to 32 km/h). Gusts could reach up to 35 miles per hour at times. Because of this, the 30 degree temperatures will feel more like the low 20 degree temperatures. After that, another colder air mass moves in, pushing temperatures back into the mid-20s by the end of the week. Other than Sunday night, our only chance of snow this week is on Wednesday. As warmer temperatures also set in on Wednesday, parts of the area could see mixed precipitation throughout the day. Rain/snow amounts overall will remain fairly light, but we will keep an eye on this over the next few days. Fortunately, temperatures are expected to rise until next weekend. On Saturday and Sunday there will be almost normal maximum temperatures of up to 30 °C.

DROUGHT UPDATE

Drought REG HD_derek.png

Overall, the U.S. drought monitor for local areas remains unchanged from last week. Although November started very wet, the weather has become drier over the last week. Still, all areas will end up receiving well over 100% of the average monthly precipitation for November. Snowfall has been below average over the past 30 days; However, the average amount is relatively low for this time of year. Well below average temperatures are expected through next week, with the exception of ice formation spreading to additional lakes, ponds and small rivers. In addition, this area is ideal for snowmaking work. So you can expect snow to be produced on every ski slope or ski area.
