Former Alabama prep star one step away from induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Former Alabama prep standout Maxie Baughan is closer to being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame than at any time since he was originally eligible for induction into the Class of 1980.

On Tuesday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced that the Bessemer High School graduate was selected as a finalist for the Class of 2025 by the Seniors Blue-Ribbon Committee. Baughan, along with Sterling Sharpe and Jim Tyrer, were among the candidates being considered for enshrinement when the 49-member Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee meets to select the class of 2025.

In the past, voting included senior candidates along with modern-era finalists and contributor and coach nominees. But the process has changed this year.

For the class of 2025, the selection committee will consider the senior, coach and contributor candidates in a separate vote. The Contributor finalist is Ralph Hay and the Coach finalist is Mike Holmgren. Each member of the Selection Committee may vote for up to three of the five finalists. To achieve inclusion, finalists must be selected on 80 percent of ballots. If no one meets this threshold, the candidate with the most votes is elected.

Baughan was one of 12 senior semifinalists last year. But the top candidates were linebacker Randy Gradishar, defensive tackle Steve McMichael and wide receiver Art Powell, with Gradishar and McMichael joining the class of 2024.
