Former Oregon football receiver Ryan Pellum was arrested for pistol whipping on Christmas Day

A former Oregon football wide receiver who just entered the transfer portal this week has been arrested for an alleged pistol-whip incident.

Ryan Pellum, known by the full name Ryan Tristan Chance Taylor, was arrested Wednesday in Springfield on a charge of assault with a firearm after he allegedly pistol-whipped a person on Christmas Day in Long Beach, California.

Pellum, originally from Long Beach, played one season of football for the Ducks, redshirting. He is the nephew of former Oregon linebacker and defensive coordinator Don Pellum and chose to sign with the Ducks in 2023 under that last name rather than his first name, Taylor.

A university athletics spokesman declined to comment on Pellum’s arrest, saying he is no longer a member of the Oregon football program.

On Tuesday, Long Beach police issued an extradition warrant, and Pellum was arrested the next day at his home on Gateway Street in Springfield. According to court documents obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive, the bail was posted by an unknown person who is expected in court in California on Jan. 23.

According to court documents, Pellum is accused of assaulting a person by striking them in the head with a 9mm handgun, resulting in a head injury that required stitches. Pellum then allegedly fired two shots from the weapon in an unknown direction. The name of the alleged victim and his relationship to Pellum were not disclosed.

During his arrest, Pellum reportedly told police he knew about the California warrant because people had been calling him about it, but did not elaborate.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
