Former UCLA Bruins star makes shocking NBA All-Star case

Heading into the 2024-25 NBA season, I don’t think anyone had “breakout year for Norman Powell” on their bingo card.

Yet here we are.

The Los Angeles Clippers guard has been absolutely great this season, averaging 24.2 points per game on 49.5/46.6/84.5 shooting distribution.

In his last five contests, Powell is scoring 28.2 points per night and has made 18 three-pointers during that stretch.

With the NBA All-Star Game just around the corner, the former UCLA Bruins star is just around the corner bring a serious case to achieve the first selection of his career, and at the age of 31 no less.

Don’t get it twisted: Powell has always been a good scorer. He approached the 20 points per game mark twice, scoring 18.6 points per game and then 19 per game in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

But we have never seen such production from Powell.

It’s not just that he’s averaging a lot of points for his career. It’s also the case that, despite the increased volume, he’s surpassing his previous best in three-point percentage and is currently at his career-high in field goal percentage.

He also has a 64.1 percent hit rate, the best of his career.

Additionally, Powell is a very solid defender, making him a legitimate two-way player for a team that desperately needed reinforcements on both ends of the court in Kawhi Leonard’s absence.

Consider this: Even though Leonard hasn’t played a game this season, the Clippers are 18-13 and in first place in the Pacific Division.

That’s a testament to how great Powell was, and the fact that he posted a .161 win share per 48 minutes (another career high) is a testament to that how important The UCLA product was a surprising success in Los Angeles.

Coming into his NBA tenure with the Toronto Raptors, no one would have imagined that Powell would one day be an All-Star, but it’s very difficult to argue against his case.

Powell doesn’t complain. He’s not one-dimensional. He does a little bit of everything and he deserves a lot of credit for that.
