Fort Moore in Georgia renamed Fort Benning and honored a veteran of the First World War

Defense Minister Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum on Monday to rename Fort Moore in Georgia as Fort Benning.

Fort Moore was originally named after lieutenant General Harold Gregory Moore Jr., who fought in the Vietnam War and received the Distinguished Service Cross for Valor.

The new name honors Corporal Fred G. Benning, who fought in 1918 in the US Army in France during the First World War. I.

Banning also earned the distinguished service cross for extraordinary heroism after taking command on his train when his command -managing officers were killed or unable.

Last month, Hegseth signed an order to rename a base in North Carolina as Fort Bragg.

This basis was renamed Fort Liberty in 2023 as part of the efforts of the then President Joe Biden to remove names that received confederated soldiers. It was originally called Fort Bragg to Braxton Bragg, a general confiscated and well -known slave owner from North Carolina.

It was now renamed private first Class Roland L. Bragg, a hero of the Second World War, who earned the Silver Star and the Lila Herz for his courage during the battle for the bay.

Hegseth stated that further name changes come.

“There are other bases that have been renamed that undermine exactly the same legacy,” he said. “There is a reason why I said Bragg and Benning when I went to the Pentagon on the first day. But it’s not just Bragg and Benning. There are many other service members who have connections. And we will do our best to restore it. “
