Fort Wayne man sentenced to 155 years in prison for murder and attempted murder on Christmas Eve | Dishes

A 21-year-old man was sentenced Monday to 155 years in prison for a Christmas Eve shooting that killed a 25-year-old in southeast Fort Wayne.

Trivel Crum, 21, faced up to 173 1/2 years after a jury found him guilty of murdering 25-year-old Javion Jaquon Grandberry about a month ago. He was convicted on all counts: murder, criminal recklessness, unlawful carrying of a handgun and two counts of attempted murder, along with a sentence enhancement for using a weapon to commit the crime.

He was sentenced to 60 years for murder, 35 years for attempted murder, five years for unlawful carrying of a handgun, two years for criminal recklessness and 18 years for enhanced sentence. Those sentences will be served consecutively, and Crum also received a three-year sentence Monday for violating probation.

Grandberry was with two people who were also shot at by people in two vehicles on Christmas Eve last year.

The man, who survived his injuries, was shot in the groin, thigh, stomach, shoulder and head. A third victim, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle during the shooting, was not injured, Officer Nicholas Lichtsinn wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

Deondre T. Jones, 28, was arrested the day before Grandberry’s death and initially charged with three counts of attempted murder. One of the attempted murder charges changed to murder after Grandberry’s death. He was also charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and a sentence enhancement for use of a weapon. He is awaiting trial, which is scheduled to begin March 4.

On Dec. 24, officers found a Chevrolet Impala with bullet holes and blown out windows near Hanna Street and Tillman Road where two men had suffered gunshot wounds.

Surveillance video from nearby businesses shows drivers in two vehicles, a Lincoln MKX and a Ford SUV, following the Impala from a bar before ambushing it in what appeared to be a “coordinated and premeditated” attack, the affidavit said.

The Impala Grandberry was driving attempted to pull into a gas station parking lot before the shooting, but was blocked by a suspect’s vehicle.

Video from the 19th Hole Bar also shows Crum and Jones in the parking lot before the shooting. Jones grabbed a rifle, held it at his side and then pulled a handgun from his waistband, the affidavit said.

According to court documents, the suspect vehicles left the scene together after the shooting.

Crum told police he was drunk and didn’t remember what happened during the shooting.
