Frankie Luvu was fined for hitting Jared Goff during Commander’s pick-6

The NFL agrees that Frankie Luvu took a cheap shot at Jared Goff in a pick-six from the Washington Commanders last Saturday. Not that a fine will do anything to ease the pain for anyone in the Detroit Lions organization or for the fans.

Luvu was fined $16,883 for hitting Goff hard in the head by a passer while blocking as teammate Quan Martin hit a game-tying ball in the second quarter of their NFC divisional playoff game at Ford Field Interception return danced into the end zone for a touchdown. The NFL announced fines for last weekend’s games on Saturday afternoon.

No penalty flag was thrown on the play, although a 15-yard penalty would have nullified the touchdown and put the Commanders at approximately the Lions’ 22-yard line. The block occurred at about the 7-yard line and Goff went to the locker room to be checked for a concussion.

Washington, a 9½-point underdog, defeated the Lions 45-31 to earn a spot in the NFC championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Less than a minute after the pick-six, Luvu made an illegal hip-drop tackle on Jahmyr Gibbs, although no penalty was assessed. He was fined $16,883 for unnecessary incivility, his second fine of the game.

Lions receiver Jameson Williams was fined $25,325 for unsportsmanlike conduct (obscene gesture) after his touchdown run in the second quarter. Teddy Bridgewater was in the game at the time when Goff returned to the sideline with his helmet on and was cleared to return.

It’s Williams’ fourth fine this season, not including his two-game PED suspension, when he forfeited $210,270.
