“Ahead of Thanksgiving, drivers continue to be teased with the prospect of a national average of $2.99 per gallon, a level now seen in 32 states. But over the last few weeks the stars just haven’t quite aligned,” said Patrick De Haan , head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Last week, Russian threats after Ukraine deployed long-range U.S. missiles pushed oil prices back above $70 a barrel. Now, some pre-Thanksgiving promotions are pushing gas prices back down, even as oil prices remain high. Right now we’re just a few cents away from the national average, which falls to $2.99, but in the third year we could be below that again. As Americans prepare to hit the road for Thanksgiving, we are experiencing the lowest national average price for gasoline since 2021, a far better economic picture than the last time gas prices were this low.”
