General Atomics receives Navy contract to further develop long-range maneuvering projectiles

SAN DIEGO, CA / ACCESSWIRE / December 2, 2024 / General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) announced today that it has received a contract from the U.S. Navy through Advanced Technology International (ATI) for its Long Range Maneuvering Projectile (LRMP) Common Round. GA-EMS received the award as part of the Naval Surface Technology Innovation Consortium’s (NSTIC) Other Transaction Authority (OTA) contract vehicle to further develop and further demonstrate the company’s LRMP prototype system to support the Navy’s extended-range common-round offensive strike capabilities to carry out artillery systems using 155 mm field caliber artillery systems.

“The LRMP is truly an innovative design that provides increased range and maneuverability, precision and payload flexibility to support a variety of missions, including attack and reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance missions,” said Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS . “The LRMP’s capabilities have the potential to provide lethal effects to defeat static and moving targets at ranges of 120 km and more. This represents a four-fold increase in range over traditional artillery systems over what is available today.”

The LRMP’s simplified design and unique projectile shape allows for very long glide ranges without the need for auxiliary propulsion or rocket support. It is scalable for use in all existing artillery systems and ensures compatibility with legacy launchers, autoloaders and handling equipment. With greater maneuverability, accuracy and payload options, LRMP provides additional cross-range advantages to increase the strike zone without the need to reposition the launch vehicle.

“GA-EMS has conducted successful LRMP testing to ensure survivability, performance and aerodynamics,” said Mike Rucker, head of GA-EMS weapons programs. “We are currently preparing for the upcoming LRMP Common Round sliding tests at the Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah as part of the initial task order. Additional milestone testing and follow-on tasks will be completed during the five-year design-to-manufacture performance phase of the contract, assembling and testing LRMP rounds for 155mm artillery systems as well as other platforms.”
