Get Physical: Get the momentum going with Gibbon: Beyond the Trees

Gibbon | Postcard presented

Although we’ve covered several promising games on Getting Physical, today’s article is unlike any other. Not because of the genre or style, but because of the mission behind it. This game is Gibbon: Beyond the Treesby Broken Rules. It is a game that focuses on protecting wildlife and raising awareness about wildlife. I don’t normally get on my soapbox for things like this, but these days, when our own future looks so uncertain, it feels particularly important.

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees | Packaged extras

Like every physical game released by Super Rare Games, this one is neatly and solidly packaged. But I always say: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, so I don’t expect anything different when it comes to shipping. At least not for a standard edition game. Once it’s taken out of the cardboard box, it can be pulled out of the bubble envelope with little effort and the fun begins.

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees | Cards

One of the best things ever Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is the visual aesthetic of watercolor that is warm and striking. This can be transferred very well to the trading card game. I appreciated the duality of the specimens I got, one with a destroyed jungle and one with a pristine jungle. The third card I drew was an action shot of the titular creature.

However, that’s not all for collectibles in this Getting Physical. Gibbon: Beyond the Trees Plus, promote activism and awareness with one of four collectible charity NGO cards. Not only does this highlight the difference each charity makes, but it also provides an incentive to try and get all four cards.

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees | Manual Plus Cartridge

Perhaps the prettiest extra in this package is the large and eye-catching postcard we used at the beginning of this article. Luckily, there are also some great illustrations in the instruction manual, which also go into detail about the gibbon’s plight and the creative process behind the game’s design.

During difficult times it can be very easy to feel powerless. That’s why I’m happy about it Gibbon: Beyond the Trees serves as a reminder that just because the fight to save something is hard doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it. If you’re interested in this remarkable physical adventure, you’ll be pleased to hear that about half of it is still for sale in the Super Rare Games store.
