Giving Tuesday: How to Support Local Nonprofits This Holiday Season | News

SPOKANE, Wash. – Following Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, a global day of generosity.

If you’re looking for local organizations to support this holiday season, Toys for Tots is a nonprofit that needs your help.

Toys for Tots Spokane began toy distribution Monday and expects to provide nearly 15,000 children with Christmas gifts this year.

“This is our way of giving back to our community. Everything donated in Spokane stays in Spokane. It doesn’t go anywhere else and anything not used this year will be used next year. So, all these kids.” “We’ll wake up in the morning and Santa Claus has come,” said Kari Sobisky of Toys for Tots Spokane.

Given the great need in the community, the organization is still asking for donations.

“We urgently need books for all ages, coloring books, toys for ages zero to two, and toys for ages 10 to 12, for both boys and girls,” Sobisky said.

You can donate toys at any local fire station or at the Toys for Tots’ Warehouse, located in the Northtown Mall in the old Macy’s area.

For many families, the toy car makes a big difference.

“My husband just had knee surgery, so it helps us a lot because we’re a little tight on cash and we want our daughters to have a good Christmas,” Spokane resident Judy Hegwer said.

Meals on Wheels is also asking the community to help provide meals for seniors this winter.

“$5 feeds a senior citizen. So you can’t really get this deal anywhere else. “This is a fantastic deal, but really it’s about helping us and giving hope to those who may be struggling,” said Executive Director Owen Esperas.

Meals on Wheels can also call on volunteers to help deliver meals at any time.

Local nonprofit Our Place also celebrates Giving Tuesday to fulfill its mission of community outreach.

The organization provides useful services such as a food center, bus tickets, laundry center, and personal hygiene, clothing and household item donations.

“We have the old saying: ‘Pay your rent first, then we can help you with everything else,’ such as food, clothing, toiletries and household items, and laundry service if you don’t have laundry in your apartment,” said Tracie Swanson, executive director of Our Place.
