GM – New Raiders Deal for Geno Smith will be done “pretty soon”

Palm Beach, Florida – General Manager of Las Vegas Raiders, John Spytek, did not provide any details about a potential contract extension for Quarterback Geno Smith, but is confident that a deal “pretty soon” will be concluded.

“We are really looking forward to not only this year, but not only in the coming years,” said Spytek on Monday morning at the annual league meeting.

After coach Pete Carroll said, Spytek’s comments came on a new deal for Smith, which was traded in the Seattle Seahawks in the third round in 2025. He has a year and $ 3,3 $ 3,10 for a three-year contract over $ 75 million, which he signed in March 2023.

John Schneider, General Manager of Seahawks, said reporters after the trade had become official at the beginning of the new league year that the Smith team prompted to expand him after trying. Brady Henderson from ESPN announced a source that Seattle Smith had offered a two -year extension that would have paid him $ 40 million in 2025. “It turned out that we would not be able to complete a deal,” said Schneider.

Spytek mentioned that the deal for the acquisition of Smith happened pretty quickly due to Carroll’s previous knowledge of him. Smith played in 37 games under Carroll in Seattle and threw passing yards, 55 touchdowns and 21 interceptions for 8,641.

Carroll said Smith was an outstanding name in my head when the team at Quarterback explored a number of options because he knew exactly what he would expect from the veteran signal caller.

Carroll added that he had a detailed relationship with Smith and the two were in contact during the 2024 season, while the 74-year-old resigned from the coaching.

“When it was time to get to it, it was automatically that we (Smith) would make a shot,” said Carroll. “Fortunately, Seattle was ready to listen and John Spytek (made) his first big deal. We tore it off as we wanted. (Smith) gives us a great start to what’s going on.”

Although Smith turns 35 in October, Carroll expects to get out of two-time Pro-Bowler for a few years. Smith started in the first two seasons of his career in 29 games, but switched to a backup quarterback from 2015 to 2021. During this time, Smith played in just 15 games and made five starting appearances.

“The guy sat for almost six years and didn’t get the wear,” said Carroll. “That’s why he moves so well.”

Carroll described Smith as a “immediate fix” in the quarterback after the franchise started six players in the position after she continued from Derek Carr after the 2022 season. However, he did not rule out the opportunity to take a quarterback at some point in the design.

Carroll mentioned that the team will become creative in the design and explore all options to improve the team. “We will research every single opportunity we have,” said Carroll.

Spytek shared similar comments and said the team would continue to rate this year’s quarterback class deeply. However, the addition of Smith is a sigh of the organization.

“We could bring one anywhere, but I have the feeling that we get a man who can play football,” said Spytek. “So, the need and fear in this position are not as high as a month ago.”
