Payton Sr. is generally considered one of the largest defenders in NBA history. The NBA defensive player of 1996 was called the nickname “The Glove” for his defense and was a nine-time selection of the NBA All-Defensive team. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fam was also a nine-time NBA All-Star, in 2006 won an NBA title with the Miami Heat and a nine-time all-NBA selection. Payton Sr. is now the basketball head coach of the men of Alameda College, which is located outside of his hometown Oakland, California.

Payton II, an NBA veteran, did not make this name from Payton, certainly not easy. The former star of Oregon State, who was now playing in his ninth season, was not kept in 2016, was lifted four times by the NBA teams in six years and spent five years in the NBA G league. It was only in the 2021-22 season that he consolidated a place in the NBA and found stability with the Warrior’s stability after earning her last squad.

Payton Sr. said he was proud of what his son could achieve as a NBA player.

“He went through everything. He went through the exams and difficulties and he got it,” said Payton Sr. “I like it now because he has his confidence. He only needs that.”

Like his father with the heat, Payton II won an NBA championship as a member of the Warriors in 2022. The head coach of Warriors, Steve Kerr, still has good memories of the effects that Payton II defensive against the Boston Celtics during the 2022 NBA final in 2022.

“Gary threw the entire series against Boston,” said Kerr. “We go against all these great offensive players – Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. Gary misses game 1 and arrives after the injury to game 2 and we win four of the next five.

“This is no coincidence. Gary is one of the best defensive players in the league and he is a really dynamic role (on the offensive). We saw that. We knew what Gary was capable of at the highest level.”

Payton Sr. was primarily busy this season -Coaching Alameda College, but when the time allowed, he visited Warriors Games to support his son. In December Payton II said that he used his employee discount to receive four season tickets in the third row directly opposite the Warriors Bench. Payton Sr. said the tickets were a gift from his son who offered the opportunity to support him in the games.

When his father received the tickets as a gift from his son, a surprised Gary Payton II laughed: “He bought his own tickets. No, it’s not (a gift). He will take it back. I think I can give it as an early Christmas present. He just wanted to use my discount. You know him.

“I’ll find a way to get it out of it again. Don’t worry … If we get through a few rounds of the playoffs, the tickets will pay for yourself.”

Payton Sr. is definitely known for his talent, which is still a coach at Junior College and The Big 3 in the heyday. He also had some playful words with Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant this season, while he was in his Warriors seats. But mostly Payton Sr. offers words of wisdom from his seat to his attentive son in the game.

During the third game, Payton Sr., however, actually interviewed his son when he was in the game for execution of the Warriors in a game that led to a missed shot by Warriors Guard Brandin Podziemski. With a smile and laughter from the court, Payton II told his father that it was shot to do the clock.

“He can hear me easily,” said Payton SR .. “I usually don’t say anything. But he knows that there is something when I get up. But he told me it was because the shooting clock was going. But I told him to make a shot.”

Payton II certainly needed a few words of wisdom that entered game 3 after fighting in the first two games of the series. Payton II in particular was a steal with a steal with a steal in 12 minutes during a 109:94 defeat against the Rockets on April 23 in 12 minutes. Houston Guard Jalen Green ended with 38 points and eight 3 points in the game. Payton II described Game 2 against Houston as “the worst playoff game I’ve ever had in my life” and he was not mentally locked up.

“He knew that he didn’t have a great journey in Houston. He didn’t play particularly well in both games,” said Kerr about Payton II. “He was somehow due.”

Payton II said he had pointed out to be himself, to let himself down, to mentally b rather bite and to cause 3 chaos in game.

The added motivation came from Butler’s injury in game 2. Payton II came with the Warriors with 7:56 a.m. in the fourth quarter. He nailed a 3 pointer in the corner with 5:27 to win back an 85-84 lead for the Warriors with 5:27, followed by a lay-up and another 3 pointer. He forced the Houston Rockets Guard Dillon Brooks, her only starter without a negative point that remain with 3:47.

Payton II sealed the game for Golden State with a reverse dunk with 21 seconds ahead. During a break with a 13.2 second lead and the Warriors fans on a fever place, Payton Sr., Trevor Pope, came up to him and shouted: “He won the game!” Pops voted on these words. Payton II also played a role in the defense of Green (nine points, 4-von-11 shooting) and Rockets Guard Fred Vanvleet (5-of-14 shooting).

“He came in and was hard with (the rockets),” said Payton Sr. about his son. “(The rockets) want to make their team tougher than (the Warriors). Gary went in and climbed green and started to hold him down defensively and climbed to Vanvleet and started holding him down. He did not use.

“When he rejected two shots, I got up and said: ‘Hey, shoot on the ball.’ And when he started shooting the ball, he hits it.

Kerr about Payton II said: “I thought he played massive games in the fourth quarter to help us win the game.”

The reporter of Associated Press, Janie McCauley, said after the game Payton II that his father said he was “something special” with his performance in game 3. Payton II said for the first time that he heard his father say that about his game. Payton II was actually stirred during his opening good opportunities: a donation mixer that benefits from March 17, 2024 in Napa, California, after his father had taken the microphone and said: “I was hard with him. Nowadays I lean back and I just can’t sit back.

Payton Sr. repeated these feelings after Payton Iis after his son’s big playoff game.

“I’m his father now,” said Payton Sr .. “I like being his father. And I don’t have to be the basketball player or think that he has to play. There is only a Gary Payton, but he is named after me. I just like it because he plays the game.

“Now I can sit up here and be a proud father. My offspring does the same thing I did in the NBA, and I’m happy about it.”

Payton II said: “He says a lot without much to say. I know. I understand. And I hear him. It’s all the best and I know that he enjoys seeing playing.”
