Gov. Gavin Newsom raises California flags to full height for Trump’s inauguration

California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom will temporarily fly the American flag at full height at the state Capitol on Inauguration Day next week, joining a handful of Republican governors and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Newsom’s press office confirmed the decision to Fox News Digital on Wednesday evening.

Following tradition, flags at the U.S. Capitol and state buildings across the country fly at half-staff due to the death of former President Jimmy Carter on December 29, 2024.

Flags temporarily flown at full height will be returned to half-staff on Jan. 21 for the remainder of the 30-day mourning period, which ends Jan. 28 – eight days after President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

As of Thursday morning, Newsom is the only Democratic governor to issue the directive as Southern California reels from catastrophic wildfires.

Similar decisions were recently made by Idaho Governor Brad Little, North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Iowa Governor, Kim Reynolds, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott – all of whom are Republicans.

House Speaker Johnson also ordered flags at the U.S. Capitol to fly at full capacity for Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

“Democrats are all ‘excited’ that our magnificent American flag may fly at ‘half-mast’ during my inauguration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on January 3. “They think it’s so great and are so happy about it because in fact they don’t love our country, they only think about themselves.”

“Look at what they have done to our once GREAT America in the last four years – it is a total mess! In any case, due to the death of President Jimmy Carter, the flag will be displayed for the first time ever during an inauguration. “A future president must be at half-mast,” he continued. “No one wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it turns out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
