Greg McDermott is Robbie Hummel’s choice

If the sports director Scott Dolson was looking for advice that was to select the next basketball coach from Indiana, could he trust an icon of the rival of IU?

The revered college basketball analyst Robbie Hummel, who played the leading role in Purdue and said that he loved playing in the Assembly Hall, travels beyond the footprint of the big ten to call games. So he knows one or two things about winning basketball that appeals to the eye and makes him serious enough to weigh who should set Dolson to lead the Hoosiers.

And his choice was in the “Intent” category in Indystars Hot Board when it became known that Mike Woodson would resign at the end of the season.

“I like (Greg) McDermott, and maybe that is biased because I saw so much of Creighton, but I love their offensive, it is modern, they shoot a ton of 3,” said Hummel on the “Feld 68”. “He won, not that Creighton has bad resources, but less resources than what Indiana has. He is a really good coach. His behavior is perfect for that.”

Greg McDermott is in his 15th season in Creighton, where the Bluejays 345-169 (.671) are probably a 10th NCAA tournament appearance in a few weeks. They have been eight in three sweet 16s and an elite in the past four years. In 2019-20 they won the regular regular season in the regular season and the title of Missouri Valley Conference in 2012-13, which contained consecutive MVC tournament titles before moving up in 2013-14.

McDermott, who turns 61 in November, did three NCAA tournaments in North -Iowa in nine seasons before Creighton. From 2001 to 2006 he was 90-63 (.588) at the university before he went over to Iowa State in four seasons 59-68 (.465). Then he jumped to Creighton.

His son Doug McDermott was a three-time consensus-all-American from 2012 to 2014. He played for the Pacers from 2018 to 2021 and again in the 2023-24 season.

If Iowa opened even though Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said to support Fran McCaffery, it would be better suited for McDermott. He was born in Cascade and played in North -Iowa from 1984 to 1988 and spent a decade with coaching in the state.

But Creighton could also be at home for McDermott, whose family made financial contributions and renamed him. And he has Creighton as a Big East candidate for several years with what has developed into a ninth top 4 finish in the Big East Play.
